How to Study in Canada

Making the move to study in Canada can be a daunting experience. With over 300,000 international students currently living in the major cities, there’s no doubt it’s a great place to study. Through receiving significant funding, Canada’s largest universities and colleges attract academics at the top of their disciplines as professors and researchers to transfer their wealth of knowledge to students.

With 98 universities, over 180 colleges and close to 1000 designated learning institutes in Canada, universities in Canada offer a broad range of program and degrees covering different learning options, skills and learning styles, with the average cost of an undergraduate program sitting at $10,000 CAD per year.

In order to kick-start your study journey to Canada, there are a few things to know before studying abroad. We’ve put together some tips to help with your application, your visa and health insurance.

How to Apply to Canadian Universities

To apply to universities or colleges in Canada, you are required to pay a fee of $80-$200 CAD that must accompany your application. Fees will vary between universities.

Courses typically start in September, January and June. For September courses, you should apply before March 1 and before November 1 for January courses. It will take added time to obtain study authorizations. You should check with specific colleges or universities you are looking to apply though in case they have any particular requirements.

Colleges and universities will either make you a full-offer, conditional offer, waitlist or rejection. They will usually provide this decision within 8 weeks of submitting your application.

Getting your Visa

To be able to study in Canada you must have a study permit from Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). If you are studying in the province of Quebec, you will need to obtain your permit through the IRCC, as well as a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ)issued by the Ministère de l’immigration, de la Diversité et de l’inclusion (MIDI).

You must have your permit before you are able to enter the country, so give yourself as much time as you can. If you’re unsure or need help with the process, you can speak to your university registrar to get help. The permit itself costs $150 CAD.

With this visa you can also work on or off-campus for up to 20 hours without the need for a work permit. Remember to always check if your study permit allows you to work before you start working.

Health Insurance

All international students in Canada are required to have health insurance to cover themselves while they are in Canada for studies.

Some universities do offer plans and can add it to your tuition fees. However, some students may wish to get their own. Most insurers require you to have health insurance coverage before you move to Canada so ensure you plan well ahead.

If you want to know more, we recommend reaching out to your university to get more advice for international students.
